Story:  Thomas Lamkin's Pastor
Nov 1656 , Northumberland Co., Virginia
We know Rev. Richard Lindsay collected payment of tobacco from Thomas in September of 1657. Most parishoners paid in this way for their pastor's service.
The following except from an online article records another activity of the Parish Pastor. (Source: http://www.examiner.com/history-in-norfolk/william-harding-convicted-witch ) The author is Carson Hudson of the Tidewater History Examiner.
"Poor William Harding was living in Northumberland County on Virginia’s Northern Neck when he was accused of witchcraft and sorcery. Reverend David Lindsey of Wicomico Parish brought the accusations before a grand jury of 24 freeholders of the county in November of 1656.
"Although we have no idea today what the exact charges and evidence against William actually were, the men of the grand jury apparently accepted several depositions against him and decided that some of the accusations might be true. This placed the matter in the hands of the Northumberland County justices of the peace who quickly listened to all the evidence, reached a guilty verdict, and then deliberated over a proper punishment.
"Under the law of the period, the 1604 Act of King James I concerning witchcraft, most sorcery was considered to be a felony and, if proven, was punishable by death at the gallows… But surprisingly the justices of the peace ordered that  “…the said Wm. Harding shall forthwith receave ten stripes upon his bare back and forever to be Banished from this County and that hee depart within the space of two moneths And also to pay all the charges of Court.”
"It seems that whatever William Harding’s witchcraft consisted of, it was not considered to be too dangerous, as the justices only had him whipped… and gave him an entire two months to depart … and of course, pay all his fines and court costs before he could leave."
